Controller for US CRO-Business Unit

Candidate Role:

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to lead the financial management function for the US Business Unit within a fast-paced, high growth, global CRO. This is a unique opportunity to join a quickly growing, dynamic team, and play a key role in leading the next-stage of organic and acquisitive growth with a particular focus on the North American markets.  Reporting to the Group’s CFO in the EU and in close collaboration with the CEO-US, the US Controller will be a key support to the US Business Unit through tactical delivery and strategic input of the accounting and finance function as well as the Group’s global corporate development. Based on a deep understanding of US GAAP and business processes, ideally in the life sciences/CRO or related technical consulting/development space, this individual is responsible for developing and executing all accounting and finance transactional areas, compliance, reporting and strategic efforts. The candidate will also play a key role in scaling-up the Group’s financial management systems, including IFRS group reporting, implementing a new ERP system and exploiting data-driven business intelligence from integrated operational and financial IT systems.


  • Leads the monthly, quarterly and annual closing processes including issuance of US subsidiary financial performance package and integrating into the Group’s reporting system.
  • Responsible for all transactional areas including revenue accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed asset accounting and treasury management.
  • Runs all project accounting processes including oversight on time tracking, direct material costs, revenue- and milestone-recognition by project, subcontract costs and related margin reporting by project.
  • Manages outsourced business processes, notably in accounting and financial management.
  • Advises management on operational performance by tracking and reporting on project bookings, backlog and new/active pharma customers.
  • Leads the financial planning processes (budget, forecasts, ad-hoc business plans) for the US Business Unit and integrates them into Group global planning processes.
  • Oversees payroll execution, monitors bonus, commission and ESOP plans and manages related tracking, accounting and quarterly/annual payouts.
  • Manages annual external financial, internal controls and tax audits on the US Business Unit according to US GAAP and contributes to IFRS consolidated accounts.
  • Coordinates external auditors and advisors to optimize accounting and financial management policies as well as external tax advisors for the timely completion and filing of state and federal tax returns.
  • Responsible for other filings including, for example, annual foreign corporation reports, Delaware franchise tax reports and Federal 1099s.
  • Contributes with US management towards the financial project-management of a new lab and office facility.
  • Complements our global team effort in strategic (M&A) and operational (performance enhancing) initiatives.
  • Monitors purchasing framework for laboratory, IT and facility-related CAPEX and office supplies purchase orders, acceptance and payment.
  • Monitors employee expense reimbursement and AMEX credit card program.
  • Manages insurance program for US Business Unit.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration
  • CPA preferred
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting and financial management experience, preferably within a multi-national company
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP, experience in an IFRS-oriented environment helpful
  • Experience in implementing/operating ERP, financial reporting and business intelligence systems
  • Advanced skills in MS Office suite and experience in collaborative software applications
